At only four-years-old, tragedy struck Benny and his family when he unexpectedly was diagnosed with Acute Lymphomic Leukemia. Despite Benny’s young age, his bravery, strength and perseverance allowed him to overcome this significant life challenge. And now, Benny is a healthy 15-year cancer survivor in his third year of University at Queen’s!
While Benny’s young age prevents him from recalling any vivid memories of chemotherapy, surgeries and other heavy-duty procedures, the impacts of cancer still haunt Benny to this day. At only five-years-old Benny had a bone marrow transplant that stunted his growth. Inevitably, this challenge has confronted Benny with anxiety and insecurities that still affect him to this day, given his size when compared to peers.
Admirably, Benny has sought comfort in his music. Despite his passion for contact sports, his size has prevented him from escalating to higher levels. While initially, this was frustrating, Benny has channeled his time and energy into music instead. He is now doing amazing things as singer and drummer for The Tales, a Toronto and Kingston-based musical group.
Benny is an inspiration to us all. His ability to overcome such significant challenges with a positive attitude is remarkable. Keep smiling Benny, you’re amazing!
