"My lowest of lows helped me live out my life at my highest"

As an eager first-year university student, Emma was just settling into her dorm room in Victoria Hall at Queen's, when her life was turned upside down. Having an immediate drop in her health, Emma was brought to Kingston General Hospital and diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. Now, instead of learning where her classes were, she was learning about a disease she now had, and how it would impact the rest of her life.

A daunting thought for any 18 year old, Emma faced this battle with strength and courage, as well as a mindset that is truly inspiring. Through the process of healing her body, she managed to keep up with the demanding life of a Commerce student and grew up much faster than she had expected.

Now, Emma is an advocate for the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation, helping other young individuals cope and manage their health. Emma is an incredible leader, friend, and an inspiration to all of us to have a positive mindset in life.

Thank you, Emma, for reminding us all to be grateful for our health and to put everything in life into perspective. You are such a bright light and have taught us so much.

Watch Emma talk about her journey and how she had to adapt to her new life during the most stressful time of her life:

Keep fighting, Emma!
